As the 2006 summer season gets underway, Kulm Hotel St. Moritz will be celebrating its 150th anniversary. In retrospect, it could hardly have been a livelier century and a half. Thanks to the courage and far-sightedness of the great Swiss hotel pioneer Johannes Badrutt, the Kulm Hotel is considered by many circles to be the premier address in the Upper Engadine. 150 years ago, the Kulm Hotel was indeed the first establishment in St. Moritz to begin welcoming guests. A predominantly British upper-crust clientele came to appreciate the clear, mild summer weather up in the high valley south of the steep Julier pass.

Yet Badrutt would have been no pioneer had he not very soon taken further steps to make a name for the Kulm. One late summer's day as he bade farewell to his departing British guests, he laid a bet that they could sun themselves on the terrace in shirtsleeves even in the depths of December. On their return to the high mountain valley at the appointed month, the hotelier was indeed able to receive them under bright sunshine. The British had lost their bet, but in so doing they initiated the tradition of Alpine winter tourism. The Kulm Hotel subsequently became its quintessential cradle, welcoming an illustrious clientele from all over the world and indulging their taste for the joys of summer and winter in this high mountain valley.

The pioneering spirit that has been with the hotel since day one is also very much alive. Hence our one-of-a-kind service offer for guests during the anniversary summer of 2006. Even the kind that money can't buy.

* Grand Restaurant:

As the premier dining place at the Kulm Hotel, the imposing Grand Restaurant radiates discreet elegance to beguile any visitor. Dressed appropriately for the stylish ambience, this is where guests come to enjoy a sumptuous breakfast buffet and their half-board evening meal, plus a delicious selection of exclusive à la carte dishes.

* With its accomplished blend of elegance and cosy warmth, the intimate grill restaurant is the ideal place to spend an evening seated at an elegantly set table, enjoying the choicest specialities of French cuisine. Hans Nussbaumer is your chef, who with the other members of his team is waiting to treat you to a menu of sophisticated classical and contemporary dishes.Open from approx. * For a fun change, step in to the Italian restaurant, "The Pizzeria". With décor in the style of a traditional trattoria.

* Chesa al Parc; the restaurant by the entrance to the Kulm Park combines sporting elegance with the rustic charm of a cosy Engadine-style eating-place. Guests can sit out on the sun terrace in the afternoons and enjoy snacks, daily menus, coffee and cakes baked on the premises. On the evening menu are Swiss specialities and international cuisine, which have earned the Chesa al Parc a reputation among sophisticated gourmets and bon-viveurs.

* The Altitude Bar emits an atmosphere of sophisticated intimacy from its welcoming bench seats and stools, surrounded by elegant wood décor. It is a popular place for guests to enjoy their nightcaps, and fills up earlier in the evening with people who appreciate a fine after-dinner drink to the gentle accompaniment of live piano entertainment.

* The Sunny Bar is a Kulm Hotel legend. The daring bobsleigh pilots who make the Cresta Run have congregated here for decades, and it is also a "local" for any number of figures from high society. Cresta Run trophies and photos of celebrated patrons adorn the walls, conveying a vivid impression of the bar's lively past. Suspended from the ceiling is a pair of gymnasium-style rings, specially for extra self-confident athletes to flex their muscles in demonstrations of prowess. In winter, after the day's racing is done, victory honours are celebrated in the afternoons at the Sunny Bar. The sun terrace is open in fair weather - just the place to partake of a leisurely lunch. A lively history stands in fascinating contrast to the venue's modernistic interior. Ensconced in this ambience, guests can nip at fine drinks and savour exclusive sushi as well as other Japanese and international cuisine.
